CHANCE TO PROVIDE AMENITIES AT OHOPE

Ohope ratepayers are to be given the opportunity of forming a special rating area similar to that at Edgecumbe, under which system a ratepayers’ committee would be able to decide on what improvements the money raised by a special rate should be spent. The Whakatane County Council decided on Tuesday that it would give effect to a petition if it were signed by a bare majority of the ratepayers concerned. It was pointed out to the meeting that under present conditions Ohope had little prospect of permanent improvements.

Cr W. M. Clarke said he had already made that clear to any residents who had approached him. When, the question of absentee ratepayers arose, the Council decided it would accept a petition signed by a bare majority of the ratepayers, as it was not considered the absentees merited any special consideration. <

It was suggested that a 6d rate would be sufficient to provide footpaths and channelling. /Mr J. L. Burnett, chairman, reported that the Main Highways Board was at present considering the Wainui deviation through Ohope as a main highway proposition. That should make a big difference to the Ohope settlement and the access to it.
