British Wool Production One Per Cent Off Target: Output Still Rising
Britain’s wool textile industry is within one per cent of its production target—and output figures are still rising. The industry’s latest production figures, announces the Joint Advisory Committee on production, show the highest volume of output since the war.
The volume of monthly deliveries in the February-March period,-com-pared with last September, shows increases of 2,280,000 linear yards in woollen and worsted cloth, I, in yarn and 2,960,0001bs in tops. The weekly output of tops in the four weeks ending March 31 was 5,670,0001b5, an increase of 15 per cent on the figures in September 1947, and tops drawn in • worsted spinning in the same four weeks of this year were 4,110,0001bs a week, an increase of 10.5 per cent. Deliveries of worsted yarn during February 1948 were at the rate of 3,540,0001bs a week, an increase of 9 per cent over last September. Deliveries of wodllen and worsted cloth in February were 5,540,000 linear yards a week, an increase of 11. per cent on September’s figures. These figures show an overall increase for the industry of 11 per cent, compared with the official target of 21 per cent—a result, says the Joint Advisory Committee, reflecting the good spirit of all engaged in this No. 1 exporting industry.
