Bay Rugby Referees Prepare For Season: Question Of Expenses The annual meeting of the. Bay of Plenty Referees’ Association was held at Matata during last weekend. There were twenty members present, presided over by Mr C. Burt.

Officers elected were: Patron, Mr C. Burt; president, Mr D. Mason; vice-presidents, Messrs K. Rowe and R. Woolliams; secretary and treasurer, Mr McCelland; appointment board, Messrs K. Rowe, McCelland and C. Donovan; delegate to Bay Union, Mr McCelland; delegate to N.Z. Referees’ Conference, Mr Whitehead.

It was pointed out that referees expenses should be paid out of the gross gate takings of any Shield match in which expenses were incurred. A recommendation is to be forwarded to the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union requesting an increase in the expenses allowed.

Concern was expressed by the Opotiki delegates about the new constitution which had just been accepted by the Opotiki Rugby Sub-Union. Certain clauses were incomplete in their opinion and although strenuous endeavours had been made to have these remedied, they had so far been unsuccessful. After hearing the delegates’ complaint, the meeting decided unanimously in favour of supporting the Opotiki Referees’ Sub-Association, and a recommendation will be forwarded to the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union along those lines. Opening Of Rugby Football And Basketball Season At Waimana On Saturdav Two players were injured in Rugby football matches played at the Waimana Domain last Saturday. During the game between Waimana Juniors and Opotiki United Juniors, Terry Hudson of Opotiki, received a nasty gash over his right eye and slight concussion, and was unable to continue play. A Waimana Maori senior player, known as “Honey,” received an injury to the shoulder, thought to be a fractured collarbone, and was taken.to hospital, but returned home after the X-ray. The matches opened with a curtain raiser between the Waimana and Tara Tara school boys, a most willing game, Tara Tara won B—3. Nukuhou school boys and Tara Tara played a spirited game also, before the senior match commenced. Waimana juniors played Opotiki United juniors and after a slow beginning Waimana did v/ell to hold last year’s winners of the Opotiki junior competition to a 12 to 6 win to Opotiki. United tries were got by P. Auaere, L. Brown, A. Swinton and ,a penalty was picked by J. Koopu. Waimana’s six points came from a try by R. Fleming who was playing a hard bustling game; and a penalty by Barry Stevenson. The referee was Horace White. In the Waimana seniors Opotiki seniors match, Waimana were quickest to settle down, the first score came from Mauri, making a nice opening for D. Black to score wide out. Taka failed to convert. United then started movements of combined back and forward attack, but could not penetrate Waimana’s solid defence. Half-time came with the score Waimana 3, United 0. Resuming play Waimana were quick on attack, play settling down ,in .United 25. From a scrum down'R. Bell hooked cleanly for Taka to send his backs away for P. Hillman to score, the kick failing. United now settled down,, giving a bright display of back movements. A penalty was’ awarded and United made no 'mistake with the kick. Good play ( by the United forwards resulted in Gage going over for a try. From the kick off, United gained possession and scored again. A breach by the United pack gave Te Pu a shot at goal, with a nice kick making the store 9 all. United was next to score and converted, and the final score was United 14, Waimana 9. Referee was John Brown. Basketball The season opened with friendly matches between Waimana, Tara Tara and Opotiki United. Referees were Miss M. Stewart, Mrs Delemere, Mrs Stansbury and Miss M. Boynton. Results:— Waimana B 3 v Tara Tara 2; Waimana A 9 v Tara Tara 0; Waimana A 5 v United 9; Waimana B 0 v United 10; United 11 v Tara Tara 1. First Round Draw For Rangitalki Rugby Games Following is the draw for senior and junior first round matches under the jurisdiction of the Rangitaiki Rugby Sub-Union:— Seniors April 24: Te Teko v Matata, Otakiri v Edgecumbe, Thornton v Matahina. May 1: Matata v Thornton,' Edgecumbe v Te Teko, Matahina w Otakiri. May 8: Thornton v Te Teko, Matahina v Edgecumbe, Otakiri v Matata.

Whakatane Sub-Union Rugby Football Draw The Whakatane Rugby Sub-Union starts the first round of its Senior and Junior competition on Saturday with three Senior and three Junior matches. All the clubs in the Sub-Union will be starting their matches for the first time at the new times which are 1.15 p.m. for the Juniors and 2.30 for the Seniors. Games at the Whakatane Domain are: Seniors, United v P.W.D., on No. 2 ground and Wairaka v Paroa on No. 1. In the Juniors, Paroa will play Wairaka on No. 2 and United will play Waimana on No. 1. There are also two games to be played at Taneatua between Poroporo and Taneatua in both the senior and junior grades.
