“Borrowers” At Dunedin Show Latent Honesty

On the occasion of the centennial of Otago it is fitting that two striking cases of latent honesty should be recorded. A Wellington woman motored to Dunedin. She arrived about 6 p.m. on New Year’s Day, and finished the trip with two gallons of petrol. She left her car outside her mother’s house all night. Next morning she found the tank empty. After some difficulty the motorist managed to obtain two gallons in a tin, and this quantity she put into the tank. On measuring up the following morning, she found the tank contained five gallons. The borrower had returned and done the decent thing.

In the same area of Dunedin a car was missing from its accustomed parking place during the holidays. It was found undamaged, a few miles away the next day. On the seat was found a note, “Thanks for the loan of the car,” and underneath the note was a £1 note.
