Monthly Women’s Institute Meeting At Taneatua
There was an excellent attendance at the monthly meeting of the Taneatua Women’s Institute held -in the sports pavilion on Thursday, Mrs Grey presiding. The aspirations were repeated in unison after which members stood' in silence as a mark of respect to the memory of the late Mrs Rae! An apology was received from Mrs Caverhill, V. 0., who was to have visited the Institute. The letter from the Federation President was read and discussed.
It was decided to commence meetings at 2 p.m. in future instead of 2.30' as formerly as it was felt there was insufficient time to conduct the meetings. A very interesting reading on early happenings with the Maoris in this district was given by Mrs Gardner. The roll call “My favourite recipe” was well responded to. A happy interlude was provided by two * presentations, the first being a charming shoulder spray presented to Miss Alma Frost who was celebrating her 21st birthday. Mrs Grey congratulated Miss Frost on attaining her majority and conveyed the good wishes of all members. Mrs Grey then presented Mrs J. Lawn with a good service badge and stressed the good and loyal service Mrs Lawn had given to the Institute.
Members were interested in a demonstration on the making of cellophane hats. A wall competition arranged by Mrs Allen was won by Mrs McDonald.
Entries in all competitions were good and results are:— Jam jar of autumn leaves and berries: Mrs Gardner 1, Mrs Allen 2, Mrs Hayward 3. Dark plum jam Mrs Olliver 1, Mrs Merrie 2, Mrs Lawn 3. Best vegetable: Mrs Olliver 1, Mrs Hayward 2, Mrs Allen 3. Best flower: Mrs Bennett 1, Mrs Fitchett 2, Mrs Merrie 3.
W.I. Drama Circle A very pleasant was spentby members of the Drama Circle at TanCatua when they met recently at Mrs K. Allen’s residence. Mrs McDonald presided. Considerable discussion took place re the choice of play for the Drama Festival which is to take place at Taneatua in 'July. A play reading “The Late Miss Cornell” was very well done by Mesdames McDonald, Goodhew, R. McGougan, Gardner, Bennett and K. Tebbutt and thoroughly enjoyed by the members. Supper was served and the president thanked Mrs Allen for a very enjoyable evening. W.I. Gardening Circle Taneatua W.I. gardening circle met at Mrs R. Sisam’s home for the monthly meeting. Mrs Fitchett presided over a large gathering and routine business was dealt with. Considerable time was spent in drawing up the programme for the coming 12 months. Mrs Allen gave a very interesting, reading on growing bulbs in fibre. - Mrs Sisam demonstrated the making of hats from cellophane paper and displayed two finished hats. Afternoon tea was served after which members.'inspected the spacious grounds find bush house. The meeting closed with a very hearty vote of thanks to the hostess. The judges awards were as follows: ' Best flower: Mrs Merrie. Best vegetable: Mrs Sisam. Vase of flowers: Mrs Olliver.
