All Returned Service Applicants Now Admitted To Medical School
He was pleased to report that following negotiations between the education committee of the Rehabilitation Board and the Otago University Council, every returned serviceman who had passed his medical intermediate examination last year, and had made the necessary application, to the University, had been admitted to Otago Medical School, together with those who had not been admitted in 1947, said Mr B- Barrington, at the quarterly meeting of the Rehabilitation Council held in Wellington. Mr, Barrington, who is a member of the Rehabilitation Board, is chairman of the Board’s education committee. Just on 150 returned servicemen had been admitted to the Medical School to date, and the majority of these would not have been able to do so had it not been for the priority system established for returned men. For civilians entry was competitive. With them an average of over 70 per cent, in the intermediate examinations had to be gained in most cases to ensure entry, as against 50 per cent, in the case of returned servicemen.
