European Wasps Appear In Whakatane District
a European wasps, recently reported to be breeding fast in the Waikato and Hauraki Plains area, have shown up at Awakeri. Mrs A. T. Andrews found two buzzing about her kitchen the other day,'and managed to knock one into the sink, where she thought it had drowned.'’ However, after about 12 hours, the “dead” wasp came to life again. That time she attacked it with DDT and feels sure it is now dead. She said she saw others in the orchard. From its sound alone there is no mistaking the wasp. Its buzz is higher pitched and more purposeful than either the honey bee or the bumble bee.
