Minister To Be Asked To Re-Consider Decision: Kiosk & Dance Hall Site
A Harbour Board proposal to lease a small area adjoining the Whakatane Signal Station for a kiosk and dance hall site has been negatived by the refusal of the Minister of Lands to accede to a request to facilitate the lease. The Board has asked him to re-consider his decision, on the grounds that the two statements on which his letter of refusal was based were “contrary to fact.” Writing to Mr W. Sullivan M.P., who made representations on the Board’s behalf last August, the Minister stated:—“lt is found that this land was purchased by the Board in 1940 and that it is without legal access, the practical access being through the Signal Station site, also > in., the Board’s ownership. It is not considered advisable that a public dance hall and kiosk should be.'in the immediate vicinity of a Harbour Signal Station, and it is also considered that the leasing of Board property for this purpose is rather •outside the normal functions of a
