Board To Co-operate With Borough To Clean Up Waterfront Area

On Friday the Harbour Board set up a special committee consisting of the chairman, Mr W. R. Boon, and Messrs. H. G. Warren and H. Brabant to consult with the Borough Council concerning the beautifying of the area between the waterfront and Quay Street. A letter from the Borough Council informed the Board that the Council wholeheartedly supported the Chamber of Commerce in its representations that the area should be beautified by levelling, sowing grass, and when the lawn becomes .established, providing garden seats. Further, the Council’s letter pointed out that there is no suitable area in the town for country people to rest after their shopping excursions, and that the beautifying of Quay Street as .suggested would make a very fine waterfront promenade. Mr Boon pointed out that, until a permanent wall was built, only temporary’’ work could be done, but if the Borough was prepared to put its part of the area in order, he saw no reason why the Board should not co-operate. It was no use attempting to make any permanent improvements as suggested yet, but he could see no objection to levelling the area to make it useable. He was agreeable, when they could get the men and the materials to clean the waterfront right up, but it might be some years before that could be done.

, Mr Warren said he agreed the two bodies , could work together to bring about considerable immediate improvement without great expense. The Board then resolved that, if the Borough would level and grass its part of the area, the Board would level its part, but it was thought to establish a lawn on the Board’s area where the machinery would have to go to make the permanent wall would be a waste of time and money at present. .

Later, in general business, Mr Warren called the Board’s attention to the insanitary condition of the mudflats behind the shopping area which, he said, were getting “riper and riper” every autumn. He thought the Board would be hearing from the Health Department very soon.
