Elderly Passenger Dies On Air Journey

An elderly passenger in one of the Tauranga Aero Club's Tiger Moth machines, ZK AJT, died while he was being conveyed from Opotiki to New Plymouth. He was Mr William Dempster, of Opotiki, a widower, aged 74 years. The aircraft was flown by the president of the Tauranga Aero Club (Mr G. C. Roberts). He was over the district of Awakino on the last stage of his journey, when the passenger- showed evident signs of distress and slumped in his seat. Flying conditions were fairly rough at the time.

The pilot decided, in the passenger's interests, to land immediately, and this was accomplished without incident in a small paddock. However, it was found that the passenger, who has been under medical care for some time, was dead.
