Fine Record Of Soldiers’ Limb-Fitting Factory

“I am sure there is no other country in the world where there is such a small proportion of war amputees still to be fitted with artificial limbs,” said the Minister of Rehabilitation, the Hon. C. F. Skinner, at the monthly meeting of the Rehabilitation Board.

The Minister was referring to the fact that out of 491 Second World War amputees, 461 had been fitted to date and only 30 remained to be fitted. Of the 461 who had been fitted 285 had also received duplicate limbs.

The limb fitting factory has been operated by the Disabled Servicemen’s re-establishment League on behalf of the Rehabilitation Board since 1943. It has so far manufactured or repaired 1401 limbs for amputees. Of these 14 were for civilians and 188 for veterans of the First World War.
