ALMOST 8000 STATE HOUSES ALLOCATED TO EX-SERVICEMEN
A further 253 State rental houses were allocated to ex-servicemen tenants during the December-Jan-uary period .under the 50 per cent, allocation system. This brought the number of tenancies so allocated to 7945 at the end of January. Under the system at least half of all newly built or newly vacant State rental houses and flats are set aside for recommended ex-ser-vicemen tenants. Recommendations are made on the basis of urgency by the Rehabilitation Housing Committee in each centre. District allocations to ex-service-men as at the end of January, with those for the December-January period given in parentheses, are:— Auckland-North Auckland • 2333 (95), Waikato-Bay of Plenty 612 (28), Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay 346 (15), Taranaki 223 (8), Wellington Province 2827 (61), Nelson-Marl-borough-Westland 178 (7), Canterbury Province 815 (26), Otago Province 441 (6), Southland 170 (7); totals 7945 (253).
