Protest By Opouriao Bobby Calf Pool Against The Subsidising Of Tanners
The . practice whereby producers were required to, subsidise tanners for caSf skins was discussed at length at the tenth annual meeting of the Opouriao Bobby Calf Pool held in Taneatua recently. It was finally decided to send a telegram to the Minister of Marketing, Wellington, worded as follows: “That this -annual meeting of Opouriao Bobby Calf Pool appreciates the Minister allowing anything over 6/- levy against the. bobby calf skins being paid to the producer but strongly protests against the principle of one section of the community directly subsidising another section and asks the Minister to remove the anomaly of directly subsidising the tanners. for bobby calf skins.” It was decided also to enlarge the committee from six to seven and with Messrs. Santon and Grace retiring by rotation, made a vacancy of three on the committee. The election was keenly contested and the five nominations resulting in a ballot, Messrs. Santon, Fogerty and Grace being elected. The returns for last season showed an increase of approximately ten shillings on the returns for last season. The statistics for this season are: Total calves collected, 5275; total calves condemned, 231; percentage condemned, 4.38 per cent.;, cartage per calf, 1/-; railage per calf, 1/8.64; average hooks weight, 30.95; average payment on calves (per lb.), 5.068 d; average payment per passed calf, 28/0.79; payment for skinners, 14/- each.
