CANADIAN HERE TO STUDY MAORI SCHOOLS AND CONDITIONS

Dr. D. Jenness, of the Department of Mines and Resources, Ottawa, Canada, spent yesterday at Whakatane, accompanied by Mr F. T. Woodley, inspector of Native Schools and Mrs Woodley. Dr. Jenness, who is keenly interested in Indian problems in his own country, is touring the native. districts of New Zealand with the idea of comparing conditions of Maori community life and education here with those applying to the Indians in Canada. Asked for comments on his impressions so far, Dr. Jenness said he was only at the start of his tour, and did not feel that he had seen enough to form any opinions yet. He complimented this district On the sample of weather it was turn : ing on for him, and remarked that he had seen some truly beautiful scenery in the past few days. He said he had heard much of the beauty of this part of the country, particularly on the route he proposes to follow down the coast from Opotiki to Gisborne. That trip will be accomplished in slow stages, as it is Dr. Jenness’s wish to meet some of the Maori people and to study the workings of the native schools. The party spent last night at Opotiki, and resumed their trip this morning.
