Mr R. Murphy and his family are holidaying at . the Lakes. Dr. G. H. Maaka and family left on Monday for a holiday trip through the Wairarapa district.
Mr M. Lorrimer, of Ngahinipouri, Te Awamutu, is staying with Mr E. Wilson of Ohope. * Mr W. McConnell, of Whakatane, returned on Wednesday from his holiday at Cambridge. Misses Helen Suckling and Elva Hall left Whakatane for Auckland on Tuesday, for a short" holiday. Miss Margaret Gow is at present on leave ffom the Whakatane Social Security Office. Mr and Mrs A. Haines were recent visitors to Whakatane, staying with the latter’s son, Mr Naden Matthews.
Mr R. T. Morpeth and Mr G. Stenhouse, who have been on an extended cruise around the Coromandel Peninsula, will return to Whakatane tomorrow. 1
,Cr W. Hunter, who was prevented by illness front attending the monthly meeting of the. Whakatane County Council on Tuesday is to receive a letter of sympathy and good wishes from the Council.
Messrs. H. Kitto and B. Russell, poultry"instructors, of the; Department of Agriculture, were in Whakatane on a blood-survey of the Rangitaiki Plains poultry farms this week. They left for Opotiki yesterday. ’
Mr Ivan M. Withy has been appointed by the Whakatane County Council as Matata riding - represen- . tative on the Tauranga , Harbour Board in place of the late Mr R. Wilson. Mr v Withy was a candidate for the seat at the local body elections and was defeated by Mr Wilson. Other nominees for the extraordinary vacancy were Messrs. ■ E. A. Hill and Reichardt. , Mr C. *H. Brebner, County engi- " neer, has been appointed rural fire officer for the Whakatane County,, ■ in terms of the Forest and Rural -
Fires Act, 1947. He will, have wide powers in the control and prevention of fires, and may-require the owner of any land which is subdivided into allotments of less than two acres for sale or for building purposes, to remove at his own cost from the land such grass, stubble, weeds, scrub, undergrowth, rubbish or other material whatsoever that in the opinion of the fire officer should be removed in order prevent or to mihifhise the risk of the spreading of fire;
