Obituary
Mr F. W. Mayo: Early Rangitaiki Settler Mr Frederick William Mayo, a former well-known resident of fha Rangitaiki Plains has died at the age of 78. Mr Mayo’s parents arrived from Britain well over 80 years ago in the sailing vessel “Bombay” settling in the district of the same name. *;•“ - A*.
Mr Mayo was born not far from Drury, where he commenced nursery work with his father, later following the same pursuit at Palmerston North, where he travelled by horse back at, the age of 19 years, with little more than a bush track to follow for a great part of the journey. farming on the Rangitaiki Plains which were., then in the early stages of development, living there until his retirement to St. Helier’s Bay in 1934. Mr Mayo was a keen and widely known deer stalker, fisherman etc. in both the Manawatu and Rotorua districts, and more than once assisted in-the capture of live .animals for the Government game farm and zoological gardens. He is survived by his wife,, two sons, Messrs. W. G. and F. T. Mayo, Whakatane, two daughters, Mrs A. E. D. Lilloca, Tasmania, and Mrs R. Hutchison, Remuera, Auckland. There are seventeen grand children.
