Commissioner’s Inspection Of Whakatane Squadron Of Legion Of Frontiersmen
Making a tour of inspection to all units of the Legion of Frontiersmen in the North Island, Commissioner Hyde and Lieutenant Simpson, Staff Adjutant, were at the parade of Whakatane Y Squadron last Thursday evening. Commissioner Hyde commented on the good progress made by the Whakatane unit since his last visit. He spoke for about an hour on the aims and objects of the Legion, namely, service to King and country, helping one’s neighbours, service as fire police, traffic police, and availability as an organised body in any local or national emergency, such as earthquake, floods, bush fires and accidents.
The distinctive uniform of the Legion is worn only by men with an ideal, that of service and Commissioner Hyde reported that during the past year there had. been a steady influx of new recruits into the Legion. The formation of the Troop at Edgecumbe had greatly strengthened the Squadron here and all members were keen and loyal. Concluding his address with the motto of the Legion “God Guard Thee,” Commissioner Hyde handed over to the Quartermaster who then served supper.'
Commissioner Hyde and Lieutenant Adjutant Simpson left on Friday morning for Tauranga.
