Thornton Field Day

A stock judging field day was held on Mr S. Ker’s pedigree stud farm at Paroa on Thursday, January 29. Owing to hay-making and other seasonal work only ten members were present, apologies for absence being reecived from the chairman, vice-chairman and secretary.

Before the judging competition a talk on judging and a demonstration were ably given by the “Paroa” stud manager, Mr Dodson, whose pointers were invaluable to club members in their subsequent competition. The judging of the three Jersey cows was no easy task, but "thanks to Mr Dodson’s previous talk, five club members returned correct placings, the final narrowing the list down to 1,2, and 3. This caused Mr Dodson, adjudicator, much concern, but after careful consideration he awarded the following placings: Mr R. Cleland 1, Mr I. Law 2, and Mr T. Shaw 3. At the conclusion of the judging refreshments were served and Mr R. Cleland on behalf of the club thanked both Mr Ker and Mr Dodson for the use of the stud and for service rendered. This was replied to by Mr Dodson.
