Thornton Club’s Work

The February meeting of the Thornton Y.F.C. was held in the Thornton Hall on the night of Monday, February 2. Before the actual meeting, the chairman held a brief discussion on the coming Porker Competition and the Debating programme. The inter-district stock judging competitions will be held at Mr Jesse Turner’s stud farm near the Rangiuru station. This will be between the Eastern and Western Bay of Plenty districts and will decide the winning stock judging team for this district.

Mr Trevor Shaw gave a report on the District Committee meeting held at Edgecumbe which dealt mainly with the porker competition and stock judging competition. With regard to the former, it must be remembered that pigs for entry must be within the weight range, or around 80 to 901bs. The leadership week course was also discussed at the district commitee meeting and although it was proposed to forego the suggestions made by the provincial council, it was decided to hold a meeting to which all friends and others interested would be invited, when Mr Marryatt could arrange a series of lectures by prominent citizens on the subjects covered by the larger one-week' course. As decided upon by the previous monthly meeting of this club, the district committee meetings proposed to hold the forthcoming debating competition on a “knock-out” basis and at a later date to hold a debating tournament. It was proposed to hold the ordinary monthly meeting in April with Mr lan Gow as lecturer on “Debating” and to hold another night for the purpose of showing Mr Marryatt’s films. The club intended to apply for a court at the Waikato Show and the local Winter Show. Mr Marryatt offered his help in regard to transport and experience in laying out the court and suggested that all clubs make a list of various shields, ribbons and articles of interest available from each club to help make up the court.
