Labourer “Shouts” On Grand Scale With Cash Grabbed From Shop Till
In the course of a recent “bender”, Henry Thompson, 21-year-old labourer, helped himself to, £lO out of the till at Mr P. Smoljan’s restaurant, Whakatane. He proceeded to celebrate on a grand scale, and was seen at both hotels consistently “shouting for the bar.” Such was the story unfolded in Police testimony when Thompson was brought before Mr E. L. Walton S.M. on Tuesday, convicted, admitted to probation for 12 months and ordered to make restitution of the money.
Mr G. Otley, for the defendant, who pleaded guilty, offered drunkenness as an explanation, though not an excuse.
Sergeant A." B. Collinge, prosecuting, said Thompson had gone into Smoljan’s shop on Friday and grabbed the money out of the till while the assistant was at the back of the shop. Arrested later, Thompson had told the police he had become drunk and had no recollection of what had become of the money.'
