Visiting Caravans Show Ingenuity Of Design • Since the end of the war caravaning has staged such a comeback that today it is almost on a par with pre-war days. Local residents have had ample chance during the holidays just past to become caravan-conscious to a high degree, as many fine examples of the mobile homemaker’s art have passed through this district and tarried awheel at Ohope. Today with housing as it-is many people have been living in caravans as a last resort and this has helped to improve the old designs and to discover new and better ones. Always the primary factor in caravan construction is the fitting of as many devices as possible, yet maintaining comfort at top level. Compact Comfort Streamlining of the exterior has been emphasised in the majority, but the interior appointments of today’s models show striking ingenuity in compact comfort. The average caravan will sleep four adults and the usual method is to lower the dinner table to the

level of the seats, thus providing accommodation for . two persons, then two bunks on the end wall complete the four. The utilisation of all space in a caravan is clearly illustrated when one steps into one and sees all the cupboard space that is available and the odd shapes and positions of the lockers. For instance, the seats and bunks contain linen presses and clothing drawers, and the water tank is often situated under the flooring. Heating systems in the average caravan consist of a white-spirit three-burner stove set in a fireproof box usually at one end of the sink.

Lighting generally consists a wetcell battery and a car light on a length of flex. Some of the more expensive types have a small electric generating plant installed and situated on the draw-bar, but these are few.
