Early Mushrooms Following the week-end’s heavy rain early mushrooms have made their appearance in and around Whakatane, though not in large quantities.

Borough Building Permits During November 7 building permits (2 new residences, 1- addition to a residence, 3 sheds and 1 shed removal) to a total value of £4335 were issued by the Whakatane Borough Council.

Christmas Lighting Under-verandah lights are to be installed in the Borough over the Christmas-New Year period, the Mayor announced to the Borough Council last night, but warned that the co-operation of business people and residents would be necessary in conserving electricity to make it possible. .

Rotarians Aid Britain At last Wednesday’s Rotary luncheon, which is to be the last in Whakatane until January 14, Secretary H. Dewar announced that, as a result of. the Charter night collection, 15 food parcels had been sent from the Whakatane club to the secretary of the Rotary Club of London for distribution to necessitous cases.

Shop Holidays Retailers in Whakatane decided at a meeting last night that the Xmas and New Year holidays this year will be as follows:—-Christmas: Shops will be closed Thursday, Friday and Saturday, December 25, 26, 27. New Year: Thursday, Friday and Saturday, January 1,2, and 3. Retail establishments will open again on the Monday in each case.

Rowing Skiffs Founder An unenviable experience befell members of the local Rowing Club recently when they journeyed to Tauranga to take part in that club’s opening day function. Rough water was encountered during the races and on one occasion two skiffs foundered, the crews being obliged do “bale out” into the harbour. Rescue operations were carried out by launch, the rowers escaping with no more than an unpleasant wetting and the boats being unharmed. Twenty-four of the local men made the trip. Coalmine Goldfish Unusual members of the staffs at Comrie Colliery, in Fife, are three goldfish, probably the biggest in Scotland. When they started work ten years ago they were of normal size, but they have grown fat on their job, and are now 10 inches long and weigh l£lb each.
