Whakatane Now Bay Of Plenty’s Premier Port On Cargo Tonnage
During the twelve . months ended September 30 of this year, the port of Whakatane handled a greater total manifest tonnage of cargo than the other two Bay of Plenty ports, Tauranga and Opotiki, put together. Comparative figures recently received from the Government Statistician, were placed before the Whakatane Harbour Board by the secretary, Mr C. G. Lucas, - on Friday.
During the period under review, Whakatane handled 99 ships of a total tonnage of 10,361, with a manifest tonnage of 34,356. Tauranga’s figures were 109 ships, 13,288 tonnage, 15,767 manifest tonnage; and Opotiki’s 60, 6,328 and 13,318. The return shows 40 ports, with Whakatane ranking 17th in the Dominion, comparing with Onehunga 43,700 manifest tonnage and Oamaru 36,399.
