President’s Report To Whakatane Branch Of Electricians’ Institute
In his annual report to the Whakatane branch of the N.Z. Institute of Electricians, the president Mr F. W. Lysaght, wrote:—
“Membership now stands at 42, which includes five new members, 10 Assocate members and five Student members. “I would like to express my appreciation to the members of my executive committee for their splendid co-operation and their assistance in our deliberations on the many important matters that have been brought before us for decision. Visit To Karapiro “During the year a visit was made to Karapiro hydro-electric plant, also the Arapuni works and a great deal of experience was gained by all members. I desire to thank the District Electrical Engineer for his co-operation in making the trip possible, also for the very great help given by his staff to all our members during this inspection. The Rotorua members paid a visit to the Paper Mills in this district during the year and members of this Institute assisted to entertain them. “Visits were paid to our branch during the year by Mr Salvesen, Dominion president of the Institute, Mr H. L. Keys, Dominion vice-pre-sident, Mr F. Gilmore, past Dominion president, Mr C. Kenward, registrar. I would like to take this opportunity of thanking these gentlemen for the time, trouble, and personal expense they have given to further the interests and knowledge of this institute, and to say how very grateful our members are to them for their very welcome visits. Lectures And Classes “Lectures. A number of lectures and papers were given during the year by Messrs R. Thompson, R. Burgess, N. Mathews, J. Ditchfield? and a number of our visitors. I personally thank all these members for the very interesting and illuminating papers and addresses given, for without these our meetings would have very little attraction. Only one film has been screened during the
past term (Beyond the Pylons) and I think more use of this form of instruction could be carried out during our coming year, especially now that the use of the school projector has been so kindly offered us by the school.
“Classes for Apprentices have beenin progress under the able care and direction of instructor George Markland for some months past with very good results to date. Unfortunately, Mr Markland has recently left this district and the classes have been carried on until the end of the year by several of our members and with the very able assistance of Mr Hubbard and several members of his school staff. I hope that a permanent instructor .will be available from among our members for the new year. Sound Finances “A very successful social was held at Ohope in September and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. I think the new committee could consider holding these socials as an annual fixture. “The finances of the branch are in a very sound condition due to donations received in cash from the Bay of Plenty Electric Power Board, the Whakatane Borough Council, Rudge Electricaj. Coy. and a number of donations in goods received from the National Electrical Coy., Whakatane Radio an Electrical Coy., R. Oxenham, Thompson and Warner, F. Abbott, Tolley and Son and F. Lysaght. On behalf of all members I take this opportunity of thanking the donors for the assistance they have given the. branch. I also desire to thank the secretary for his very able assistance during the year, and for the very capable manner in which he has controlled the branch’s correspondence,' finance etc. “In conclusion I wish to thank all members for their very great assistance to me during my two years term and especially for the excellent attendance during this year.”
