Inadequate Facilities For Caring For Aged
“Some people are under the impression that our social service work should be receding under state aid,” said the-Rev. J. S. Strang, convener of the Presbyterian Social Service Committee. Mr Strang went on to say that the need for social service work tended to increase rather than decrease. This was due in part to the plight of the aged in these days owing to the inadequate facilities for caring for them. The large number of people in New Zealand mental hospitals was stressed by Mr Strang. “There are a lot of people in our mental hospitals who would not be there if they had anyone to care for them and many are not really mental, but rather senile.”
Mr Strang paid a tribute to the work being done by the Minister of Health (the Hon. M. B. Howard) to improve the lot of the people in such institutions.
