Accommodation For Night Classes Urgently Needed At District High School

A decision to approach the Education Board with the idea of converting two shelter sheds at the main High School block into a room of approximately 700 square feet foruse as a classroom for technical night classes was reached by the Whakatane District High School Committee at its monthly meeting this week. It was explained that the motor engineering class in particular is well attended and expanding, and will require some place to store valuable equipment. Development of Grounds

A long term plan for the development of the school grounds was considered, and the headmaster, Mr I. B. Hubbard, gave the views of the staff. The committee decided to arrange to meet in daylight one evening to go into the project further and frame recommendations to the Education Board. Accommodation

Mr Hubbard also 'reported that the numbers in all departments of the school were growing so fast that further accommodation was required. After discussion, the committee formed a sub-committee to from a report, after which the committee intends to press the Board for action. It was felt that additional permanent classrooms were probably out of the question for some time, and it might be necessary to recommend pre-fabricated classrooms, which would be required at the beginning of next year. The question of accommodation for the school caretaker and his wife was also discussed, and a recommendation is to be made to the Board that some provision should be made in the school grounds. In conclusion, the meeting passed a resolution congratulating the staff on the recent school concert, and the headmaster was asked to convey the committee’s appreciation to those concerned.

Mr J. W. Wilson presided over Messrs H. D. Paterson, W. E. Armstrong, F. Clarke, W. H. Whittaker, H. Dainton, F. W. Lysaght, and J. Duthie (secretary).
