Disease-Free Tomato Seed
Production of disease-free tomato seed having special advantages for growers has been successfully undertaken by the Plant Diseases Division, Mount Albert. The project is also notable because, for the first time in the country, a new method of seed extraction has been successfully employed. The seed of the tomato concerned, known as Potentate, was very hard to get in the Dominion before the Mount Albert work began more than two years ago. Potentate tomatoes are considered one of the best varieties for commercial purposes and, to meet the needs of the market, the Mount Albert workers were supplied with a small amount of seed which came to New Zealand from Guernsey. . Last year about 2000 Potentate plants were grown at Mount Albert and four tons of fruit from healthy plants yielded 301 b of disease-free seed with a germination rate of 97 per cent. The work will continue along the same lines this season.
