Caledonian Society Chief Reports Progress In All Departments
“I feel that we can all look back upon a very active twelve months, in which progress has been made in all departments. For this I am indebted to the unfailing loyalty and support which has been afforded me by members of the executive, the Chieftains and our hard-working secretary. Of the Band and the Young Caledonians I will say more anon, but in the meantime I feel it opportune to congratulate all concerned on the remarkable year of achievement which has just passed,” thus Chief D. Anderson in his annual report to the Whakatane District Caledonian Society.
“The year has been one of heavy commitments which have on the other hand considerably improved our assets. We have secured from Mr Oxenham the loud speaker in the hall at a cost of £3B; emergency lighting in the hall cost a further £SO; while an overhaul of the piano entailed a further £2B expenditure. In spite of this I am pleased to be
able to report a small credit balance on the year’s working. Assets shown on the balance sheet reach £1339 13s 5d but. in reality this is a very conservative figure and the true reckoning would be nearer £2500. “I am pleased to be able to report an increase in membership. “The New Year’s Day Sports were again a spectacular success and attracted a record attendance. As a result a profit of £BO was shown on the day. ' “As in the past the Young Caledonians have been most active. Still working under the ‘clan’ system some splendid evenings have been held and I must compliment the Junior Chief’s and their committees.
“The first Caledonian Ball sponsored by the Society took place during the year, and from a social point of view was' a pronounced success. “We have been associated happily with the newly-formed Society at Opotiki, and I trust that the bond of friendship which has been formed with our neighbours will continue to grow with the years. Tauranga has always supported our 'New Year’s sports and we have many friends there. We would welcome closer contacts with Rotorua Society and Band. Ingleside gatherings have been uniformly popular and profitable.
“I desire to express my deepest thanks and appreciation to all those who assisted me during the year. The work has been arduous at times but I have enjoyed my association with so many splendid and loyal supporters. I would particularly like to mention the ladies, who have carried out the work of catering so efficiently at every function and activity promoted by the Society. Without them I know we could not have hoped to accomplish so much.”
