Farmer Rescues Horses By Unhinging Pound Gate
Pressed for time, and unable to find the assistant poundkeeper handy, Thomas Godfrey Santon, farmer, rescued two of his horses from the Taneatua pound by the simple expedient of lifting the gate off its hinges. It cost him a £2 fine, with costs £l/11/- (in addition to pound fees already paid) when Mr E. 3L. Walton S.M. accepted his plea of guilty to a charge brought by the poundkeeper, Mr A. Carling in the Magistrate’s Court at Whakatane on Tuesday. Santon did not appear, but was represented by counsel who explained on his behalf that he had tried to find the assistant poundkeeper, and had paid the fees.
