Four bottles of. beer in a suitcase and one bottle partly consumed proved expensive cargo for four Maoris who were accosted on the top of Hillcrest by a Constable on the night of September 19. Charged with aiding some person unknown in the unlawful supplying of liquor to natives, James Tawaka, May Ata, John Melbourne and Charles Amai were fined £2 each, with costs, mileage and translation fees by Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Whakatane on Tuesday. None of the defendants appeared in Court.

Constable R. F. Julian gave evidence that he had accosted the four at the top of Hillcrest on the night in question. Tawaka had the suitcase with four full bottles, and the group had another bottle partly consumed.
