Chief Wants More True Scottish Spirit In Caledonian Society
“These are years of peace, and I make no apology to you in urging that they should therefore be years of planning for a better and a truer interpretation of the things for which we stand,” said Chief D. Anderson, in his annual report presented to the Whakatane Caledonian Society last week. “There is no reason in the world why we should n.ot be more active in genuine Scottish customs and activities. I note the formation of Highland Dancing classes. Our Society should foster that section, and seek to bring more and more Scottish dancing into our own social life.
“I am not being critical- when I say that we have not sufficient of the true Scottish spirit in our Society. We are all too much inclined to show a surface, but with no real interest in Scotland, the land of our proud ancestry, beneath it. Therefore I appeal to you all, but particularly the older members to actively seek to bring pito ou.r Society more of the genuine Scottish feeling and spirit, so that visitors from our Homeland will feel at home in c ur midst, and that a lead will he given to our younger members who should be brought to realise just v/nat the name ‘Caledonian’ stands for and what it means.”
