Unusual Angle To Conversion Charge: Magistrate’s Comment

“I’m not at all sure this defendant should have pleaded guilty,” said Mr E. L. Walton, S.M. in the Magistrate’s Court at Whakatane on Tuesday in convicting Desmond Keighley of the unlawful conversion of a jeep at Te Teko on July 7. Keighley was ordered to pay mileage only, £!•

It was explained by Sergeant M. Farrell for the police that the defendant was employed by Cyril Walker, owner of the jeep, to deliver bread in it. He was also allowed to drive it to and from work but not to use it for private purposes. On the night in question Keighley had driven the vehicle to a dance and it had been involved in an accident causing £34 worth of damage. The Magistrate said he was satisfied Keighley had no authority to use the vehicle on that occasion, but it seemed that a criminal process had been used for something that was more of a civil matter.
