Christmas And New Year Carnival Plans Now Further Advanced
The Christmas and New Year Carnival was advanced a further stage last Tuesday evening when a special meeting of sports and local organisations’ representatives met in the County Chambers for the purpose of overhauling the holiday programme. Tentative details were submitted by the secretary, Mr L. D. Lovelock, and after full discussion an attractive programme covering the entire holiday period was evolved.
Mr C. L. Jordan presided and in welcoming delegates remarked that interest in the proposal was already widespread and he saw no reason why the whole event should not prove an unqualified success. On Wednesday, December 24, at 1.30 p.m. there will be a children’s parade from the Borough Chambers down the Strand to Quay Street. Prizes will be offered for the best fancy dresses, trolley or car, bicycles, tricycles according to age groups—--5-7 years, 8-12 years, 12 years and over. The sum of £9 will be devoted to prizes for this event ranging from 5/- to 2/6 (Ist and 2nd prizes) 10/for specials for best boy, best girl and best decorated vehicle.
For Boxing Day a children’s beach picnic at Ohope will be arranged by the Progress League for which a programme was presented by Mr Clarke. Prize money, £lO, is to be spent mainly on ice cream which will be given out as prizes. There will be special prizes for sand castles and sand pictures. A tentative programme for New Year’s Eve was discussed and is to be referred to the carnival executive for approval.
