Contests For Three Of Nine Riding Seats In Whakatane County

If the nominations received by the Returning Officer, Mr C. G. Lucas, are any criterion, considerable interest will attach to the Whakatane County elections on November 19. There are more candidates than vacancies in three of the nine ridings and notable absentees from the lists are Crs W. A. McCracken and T. G. Cawte. There are eight nominees for the six seats on the Hospital Board, and two for the one Matata riding’s representative on the Tauranga Harbour Board. There will be no election for the Whakatane Harbour Board, the County nominations tallying exactly with the number of seats available. Those seven, with the two Borough representatives also elected unopposed, make the complete Board. There are to be contests in the Galatea, Matata and Taneatua ridings of the County. For Galatea the candidates are Messrs E. A. Dykstra and J. Wilson, for Matata Messrs A. A. Kinley and K. L. Caverhill and for Taneatua' Messrs W. M. Clark and H. C. McCready. Riding members elected unopposed are: Tarawera, Messrs W. Hunter and R. C. Leslie; Rangitaiki, Messrs D. T. Allen and L. W. Luxton; Omataroa, Mr D.' Butler; Opouriao, Mr A. F. McGougan; Nukuhou, Mr J. L. Burnett; Waimana, Mr R. F. Wardlaw.

The Harbour Board reps elected are Messrs C. McKenzie, C. T. Smith and W. Hunter (Rangitaiki Ward); W. R. Boon (Omataroa); R. Ruddick (Taneatua); A. L. Richardson (Opouriao); and J. A. Mitchell (Waimana). Four vacancies on the Bay of Plenty Power Board have also been filled without competition, those elected being Messrs S. C. Spence, G. R. Yeoman, D. S. Radcliffe and J. A. Mitchell.

The eight candidates for the six Hospital Board seats are Mesdames R. Caverhill and D.* E. Sumner, Messrs A. F. McGougan, J. P. Caulfield, J. Mullins, H. C. McCready, J. A. Mitchell and H. C. Brown.

Candidates for the Matata riding district seat on the Tauranga Harbour Board are Messrs I. M. Withy and R. Wilson.
