Final Meeting Of County Council Before Local Body Elections

Routine matters occupied a good deal of the Whakatane County Council’s time at the monthly meeting last Tuesday—the last before the local body elections.

Subject to the District Engineer’s approval of a wooden bridge, the Council agreed to accept Mr F. G. Mahy’s tender of £559/8/8 for the' Awaiti bridge. The same tenderer’s figure of £1,851/8/- was accepted for the Taneatua truss bridge. Bridge On Matahi Road The Opotiki County Council advised that the Public Works Department would make available a sum of £l5O to repair Ogilvie’s Bridge on the Matahi Road, Waimana, if a definite assurance be given that necessary road work will be attended to before the bridge repairs were put in hand. In view of the fact that it has been agreed to allow the Whakatane Council to operate on those portions of the Matahi Road situated in the Opotiki County as far as construction and maintenance work was concerned, including Ogilvie’s Bridge, Opotiki Council asked that the assurance and proposals required by the P.W.D. be supplied (through Opotiki County Council) in order that the matter could be finalised. Should the cost of repairing the bridge be greater- than the subsidy, it w.as to be understood that both Councils meet the extra cost on an equal basis.

The County Engineer reported that in company with the Engineer from the Native Department, he would be making an inspection of the Matahi Road, Waimana, for the purpose of submitting an estimate to the Council on the cost of repairing and reinstating such road. The offer is to be considered when the County Engineer’s -report on the estimated cost of the road repairs is received.

Mr J. L. Burnett presided over Crs A. F. McGougan, H. C. McCready, L. W. Luxton, D. C. Butler, R .F. Wardlaw, „R. C. Leslie, W. Hunter, C. G. Cawte, Messrs C. G. Lucas, clerk, and C. H. Brebner, engineer.
