Rotary News Travels Rotary news gets around. It is only a few months since the Whakatane Club was formed, but, at the charter meeting on Saturday night, there was a letter of congratulatory good wishes from the president and members of the Rotary Club of Newport, Isle of Wight.
Borough Nominations In the issue of Friday last the name of Arthur Geddes Beattie was advertised for Council nomination whereas the Returning Officer now advises that the name should have read DAVID GEDDES BEATTIE. The advertisement in today’s issue has been corrected accordingly.
Rotary Conference From February 16 to 19 next between 250 and 300 members of the 36 clubs of the 52nd New Zealand District of Rotary International will hold a conference at the AucklandUniversity College Hall. Permission to use the hall has ,been given by the college council. The chairman will be the district governor, Mr R. F. Gambrill, of Gisborne. There are about 2500 members in the 52nd district.
New Te Whaiti Bridge
The construction of a new reinforced concrete bridge to carry the main Rotorua-Waikaremoana highway across the Whirinaki River at Te Whaiti has been started by the Public Works Department. The bridge, which will have three spans, will replace the Bailey bridge which has been in use since the original wooden structure was carried away by floods in 1943. It will be a twolane bridge 24ft wide and 200 ft long.
Payment Of Land Tax The Commissioner of Taxes draws the attention of taxpayers to the notification appearing in tQday’s issue that the due date for payment of land-tax for the current year is on Wednesday, November 12, 1947. Demands for individual taxpayers whose surnames commence with the letters A to L will be posted on or about the sth November. In other cases where the issue of assessments has been delayed, demands will be posted later and an extended due date for payment will be shown on the demand. Noxious Weed Control Reporting to the monthly meeting of the Whakatane County Council last Tuesday, the inspector, Mr A. Carling, said there are now three gangs engaged in the clearing of noxious weeds in the Waimana, Poroporo and Te Teko districts. The gang at Waimana is spraying with atlacide, the other two gangs are dusting with sodium and lime. Visits to the gangs revealed that they were making satisfactory progress and when the weather was not favourable for the treating of .ragwort they were engaged in cutting gorse and blackberry.
