October Meeting Of Whakatane Institute
At the October meeting of the Whakatane Women’s Institute Mrs Barker welcomed Sister Institutes and visitors. A report of the Federation Council meeting .was given by Mrs Patterson. Two songs by the choir, “Starlight Serenade” and “The Merry Peasant” opened the afternoon’s entertainment. Mrs Hepburn gave two delightful items with Mrs Armstrong at the piano, and Mrs N. Carter sang two very pleasing songs. A play entitled “The Hen” was given by members of- the Drama Circle. Those taking part were Mesdames Murphy, Thompson, Hannah, T.easdale and Litchwark. As it was the occasion of the Institute’s 18th birthday, a beautiful cake (the first for some years) was cut. The ingredients had been supplied by the committee, and ‘it was made and iced by Mrs Print. Mrs Withy lit the candles, and Mrs Armstrong, president of the Federation, blew them out. Mrs Withy cut the cake. Competitions resulted: Bowl mixed flowers, Mrs Comer 1, Mrs Sutcliffe 2; best rose, Mrs Patterson 1; best vegetable, Mrs Kerr 1, Mrs Fennell 2. Gardening Circle
The Gardening Circle held it's monthly meeting at Mrs Guest’s residence, Mrs Fennell presiding. Apologies were received from Mesdames Shaw, Patterson Murphy and Larsen.
Notes on the staging of show blooms were read by all. The Roll Call, “Birds in the Garden” was well responded to. Mrs Fennell demonstrated the grafting of fruit trees. A competition was won by Mesdames Sutcliffe, Armstrong and Haultain.
Competitions resulted: Best flower hat, Mrs Sutcliffe; best tulip, Mrs Fennell.
