Waimana Maori Claims Bounty For Father’s Capture Of Killer

A romantic story of the early days in the Opotiki and Urewera country was unfolded in the House of Representatives recently when Mr T. Omana, Government member for Eastern Maori, presented a petition signed by Mr Wari Te Whiu of Waimana. The petition asks for the sum of £IOOO, allegedly due to Mr Te Whiu’s father, who captured Kereopa, a Hauhau chief who was hanged at Napier in 1872 for the murder of the Rev. Carl Sylvius Volkner.

The petition tells how Kereopa seized Mr Volkner, hanged him and was subsequently captured by Te Whiu, chief of the Tuhoe tribe at Ruatahuna.

The petitioner claims that the promised bounty was never paid to Te Whiu, who was petitioner’s father, and that in the .meantime the Government confiscated the land of Te Whiu and his family under the legislation which authorised the Crown to confiscate land of certain tribes in the Taranaki and Waikato districts who had engaged in acts of rebellion against the Queen.
