New Members Welcomed At Bowling Club Opening

A special welcome to the large number of new members was extended by Mr J. W. Wilson at the official opening day for the 1947-48 season of the Whakatane Bowling Club on Saturday. He also welcomed the many bowlers and their wives, and visiting teams being from Taneatua and Te Puke. Mr Wilson expressed the thanks of the executive to all those members who had assisted during the close season in the preparation of greens and surroundings. The greens were then declared open for play. Mrs P. 'F. Dixon, wife of the immediate past president, threw the first jack, and Mr R. F. Smith played the first bowl.

The draw for the afternoon announced, teams settled down for the first game of the season, some very close decisions being returned on the cards. * * ■the detailed results were:— Te Puke: Darvill, Smith, Gosling, Knight' (s) 12 v Whakatane: J. Murphy, Spong, Coates, Good (s) 22. Taneatua: Mair, Grace, Gee, Hunt (s) 20 v Whakatane: Sims, Wilson, Drube, Dixon (s) 23. Open Draw Whakatane Teams: Bradshaw, R. B. Gerring, McCarthy, Anderson (s) 16 v Angus, O’Brien, A. White, Harris (s) 10.
