Weather Mars Rowing Club Opening
The Whakatane t Rowing Club’s opening day regatta was marred by bad weather. Despite conditions, however, quite a good crowd turned out and saw some good rowing.
Mr R. T. Morpeth, President of the Club, thanked those who had turned out and mentioned the fact that weather conditions were against rowing. From a small beginning the club had grown to an excellent size. He concluded by wishing members and rowers every success during the season.
The Whakatane Citizens’ Band was in attendance and played musical items. A loudspeaker system had been installed and this assisted those on the banks in following the progress of races. Racing was for the Bergman trophy and there were four heats, two boats in each. Heat One: Dent, Fitzgerald, O’Rourke, K. Dines, T. Reid (cox) defeated Carey, Hunt, Hudson, T. Stewart and A. Reid (cox). , Heat Two: H. Armstrong, King, Shapley, Atkinson and T. Windley (cox) defeated Byrns, L. Stewart, McCarthy, Ellis and Delahunty (cox).
Heat Three: Price, Henry, Reid, Nicol and Rawson (cox) defeated Moore, P. Armstrong, Turpin, Whittaker and T. Reid (cox). Fourth Heat: G. Dines, Mullooly, Bowering, Debreceny and Rawson (cox) defeated Dent’s crew. Semi-final: H. Armstrong’s crew tied with Price’s and a row off resulted in a win for the former crew.
Final: Armstrong’s crew defeated Dent’s.
