SCHOOL STEEPLECHASE

ANNUAL FIXTURE RECORD NUMBER OF STARTERS The annual steeplechases of the Whakatane District High School were held last week over the usual courses, a fine day making conditions pleasant. There was a record number of starters, and the training that had been indulged in over the previous weeks produced good results in that almost every boy was able to finish the course. .The juniors were started first, and* shortly after the last of them were away the seniors set out on the longer course. The following .were the results:-'—

Junior: L. Stewart 1, G. Mahy 2, G. Bell 3, W. Patterson 4, S. Goodall 5, J. Bowering 6. Fastest time was obtained by J. Law, who ran the course from scratch in 21min. 34sec., only three seconds outside the record. Next fastest in order were T. Lyon, T. Windley, R. Darvill and I. Breward.

Senior: D. Conway 1, H. Watarawi 2, J. Tukaki 3, B. Skelton 4, R. Hurst 5, J. Chadwick 6. The latter again secured fastest time, but could not quite equal his record of last year. Next fastest in order were B. Skelton) G. Skelton, D. Conway and H. Watarawi. '
