EDUCATIONAL
MR SULLIVAN’S STATEMENT
DEPARTMENT’S BUILDING DIFFICULTIES
The Education Department’s building difficulties were appreciated, but the replacement of two classrooms of the Te Kaha school, made necessary by a recent fire, should be carried out as early as possible, said Mr W. Sullivan (National, Bay of Plenty), when the Education Estimates were being considered by the House of Representatives. The department should also take in hand urgently the work required at the Te Karaka school. The Minister had been sympathetic to the needs of country districts, and was to be thanked for giving what assistance he could in the Bay of Plenty district. The provision of a school at Tawharamanuku was badly required, as there were from 20 to 30 Maori children in the area who were not going to school at all. The department had called for tenders for the work, but. had found that there was no road access to the site of the school. The road was at present being investigated with a view to opening up, but the urgent necessity for a school should not be overlooked.
