HOCKEY DANCE
COMBINED CLUES’ EFFORT TANEATUA FUNCTION One of the most successful dances of the season was that organised by the combined hockey clubs of Taneatua to wind up their 1947 season. The Rhythm Vendors provided the dance music and an extra was played by Mr A. Wardlaw. Mr F. Gardner was a popular M.C. There was a large crowd present and things went with a swing from start to finish. Monte Carlos were won by Mrs E. Hill and Mr N. Semmens and Mr and Mrs L. Grey. A novelty statue waltz caused much hilarity and a tie was called between Miss G. Harrison and Mr W. McCready and Miss J. Penny and partner. A spot waltz was won by Miss Wells and partner. After supper had been served Mrs N. Semmens, president of the combined clubs, addressed the gathering and said how pleased she was to see so many present, particularly those from other clubs. She said how sorry she was to be bidding farewell to Miss Bertha Peebles, captain of the ladies team, who would shortly be leaving the district. She made a presentation on behalf of the hockey players. Mrs Semmens mentioned the good work of Mrs Bennett who both made and served afternoon tea to all players when matches were held in Taneatua. Mrs Bennett was not able to be present to receive her gift.
Miss Peebles thanked her team for their gift to her and presented Mrs Semmens with a dainty spray as a small token of appreciation from the hockey players. Several items were given, a Maori duet being very much enjoyed. A hula which was very well done by Miss A. Wilson literally brought the house down and was a fitting conclusion to a very happy evening.
