WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
MEETING AT EDGECUMBE
The September meeting of the Edgecumbe Women’s Institute was held recently in the Presbyterian Hall. Mrs Ferguson presided oyer a good attendance of members and friends. The meeting opened with the Ode to Friendship and the Aspirations were read in unison.
The Roll Call “Dont’s for a Wife” was well answered and caused much amusement. Several apologies for absence were received. Further remits for the Bi-annual Council meeting were discussed and arrangements were made for the Garden Party which is to be held at the home of Mrs D. Spence. As it was “Exchange of Programme” day with Otakiri Institute, Mrs Peck presided for the rest of the afternoon. A varied programme was presented and included singing by the choir, an interesting talk on “How father minds the home and family when mother is away” (?) and two competitions. Highlight of the afternoon was an item by Madame Peckofski and Madame Caruso. Their singing was unique, and they were heartily applauded by young and old. The hostesses for the day served a dainty and enjoyable afternoon tea, and the sales table did a brisk trade.
Entries for the various competitions were good, the results being as follows:
Best flower: Mrs Pepperill 1, Mrs H. Carter 2, Miss Fergusson 3.
Preserved vegetables: Mrs Pepperill 1 and 2, Mrs Wollett 3. Childls hospital gift box: Mrs Wilson 1, Mrs Malpas 2. , Knitted article: Miss Fergusson 1, Mrs Malpas 2, Mrs Wilson 3.
The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem.
