Tuberculosis in New Zealand

Startling figures of the incidence of tuberculosis in New Zealand were revealed in the annual report of the Health Department, tabled in the House of Representatives. The report stated that tuberculosis today was the fifth highest cause of death in New Zealand, the highest single cause of death in females between 20 and 30 years, both for Maoris and Europeans, and the highest single cause of death among all Maoris. “One-fifth to one-sixth of the total hospital population of New Zealand is suffering from tubercular disease,” stated the report. “More than one-third of the registered cases are known to be in an active infectious or potentially infectious state and institutional accommodation is available for only half of these.”
