THEN AND NOW
OLD PAPERS GIVE COMPARISON 1925 COPIES OF PRESS Recently there were handed in to the Beacon Office two copies of the “Whakatane Press,” dated September, 1925. A glance through the columns of these old publications gives some very interesting comparisons besides bringing back memories of the “good old days.” To Let There were three buildings advertised in the “To Let” column. “Sixroomed house, h. & c. water, electric light, rent (hold your breath) 22/6,” will bring tears to the eyes of many who are renting.houses today. Unfortunately no figures are given for the other properties. The Burning Question
Tobacco and cigarettes were in good supply in 1925 if the columns of the Press are to be taken as an indication.. In both papers appears a quarter page advertisement, one for “Three Castles” and the other “High Admiral” cigarettes. Pipe and cigarette tobaccos are advertised at 9d an ounce. A New Car? If a well to do citizen decided he would buy a car he had only to ring to arrange a demonstration. Overlands were available at £220 while Morris Cowleys were priced at £295 for the two-seater model and £325 for the four-seater. For those desiring a truck the new Chevrolet utility truck chassis was available at £196. No Power Cuts National electric cookers were priced at £3 10s or £5 14s double. The electric irons ranged from 30s to 325.
For Farmers
Apparently selling cream and pigs was a much different proposition in 1925 for several advertisers state that they are “cash buyers of fresh home separated cream, also prime bacon pigs.” Another advertises regular shipments to Auckland. Speed To Burn
In the local and general column is the following par:— “Six world’s grass track records were broken in one day by- Spencer Stratton, the young New Zealander, at Deagon track, Queensland, on August 20. Tearing along at 78 m.p.h. on a 7 h.p. Indian he went over a mile in 46 1-5 seconds. Then he repeated the distance on a 3j> h.p. Indian and reached the sensational speed of 76 k m.p.h. This worked out at 47 seconds for the mile.
And John Cobb has just established a new record of 396 m.p.h.!
