Local & General

Tom Heeney As Referee Advice has been received that the referee for the Rotorua Boxing Tournament to be held at the end of this month will be Mr Tom Heeney, former N.Z. Heavyweight boxer and World’s Championship challenger. Manawahe Gesture As pleasing as it was unexpected, was the handing over of the sum of £7 8s Id to the Whakatane branch of the St. John Ambulance Association. The money constituted the nett returns from a successful dance run recently at Manawahe by the local residents who desired to assist the Association forward in its present campaign for funds. Carbon Vital To Life

In the course of his talk to Rotary last Wednesday, Mr W. Dreghorn spoke of the possibility of human and animal life on other planets. On earth he said all life was due to the presence of carbon which was the chief constituent of all the cellular formations. This fact had yet to be proved in connection with other heavenly bodies. Crippled Children’s Appeal

With further monies still to come in the local branch of the New Zealand Crippled Children’s Society announce that the recent appeal already has resulted in between £l6O and £l7O being raised locally. The committee desires to express its warm appreciation to all who assisted in the drive for funds and also to those who subscribed so liberally. The Practiced Eye “We only see what we know,” said Mr W. Dreghorn in the course of his interesting talk to Rotary on ‘astronomy’ last Wednesday. “When I first studied the planet Mars through the telescope, I was disappointed. I couldn’t see a thing. But later I discovered what was known as the polar-caps and other details. It is now generally agreed that there are patches on the planet which change from red to green.”

Electric Jug Danger “The frequency with which small children were being scalded—sometimes fatally—by pulling electric jugs down from shelves and tables, is becoming alarming,” said Mr C. L. Dentice, a Wellington electrical contractor recently. In his opinion a regulation should be introduced prohibiting a greater length than three feet in cords sold with such appliances. “In some cases,” he said, “cords from four to six feet were sold with jugs. The result was that a permanent hazard to children and even adults was caused by a low hanging length of cord.” Release of Spare Parts Urged The possibility of the release of extensive stocks of motor vehicle spare parts said to be worth about £50,000 and now held as surplus stores by the War Assets Realisation Board, was the subject of a question to the Minister in charge of the board, Mr Nash, of which notice was given in the House of Representatives by Mr W. J. Broadfoot (Opposition, Waitomo). Such a release would be of great assistance to motorists, would help to v conserve dollars funds and would make for greater safety on the roads, said Mr Broadfoot. Shooting Trophies Displayed On display in the window of Rivett’s Fruit Shop, is the latest addition to the trophies proffered by the Whakatane Rod and Gun Club, and which will be shot for, on Sunday next for the first time. The new trophy was donated by the president (Mr J. D. Rivett) and will be known as the ‘Novice Cup’ for which only those who have never won a trophy before will be eligible to compete. It is a handsome silver Rose Bowl and carries with it a miniature which can be won outright. Sportsmen are reminded further of the championship event on Sunday which will decide the holder of the Lodge Cup for the ensuing season.
