ILL-OMENED PARTY
MATATA FOOTBALLERS CELEBRATE SEQUEL IN COURT Gathered to celebrate a recent Rugby victory, a number of Matata players had their party rudely interrupted when the Welfare Officer *put in an unexpected and unwelcome appearance, confiscated all the liquor present and took the necessary measures to prosecute the eight celebrants under a variety of charges covering ‘supplying and aiding and abetting.’ The sequel was heard before Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., in the Whakatane Court yesterday morning.
The defendants were Hammond Rota, Laurence F. Raureti, Morpa Rota, Bernard Penerara, Taneti Waipaki, Ben Hohepa, L. Teanui and Walter Ihaia, all of whom were defended by Mr Otley, who said that the whole incident arose out of a desire to mark a football victory in the usual way. All were members of the team concerned and freely admitted being implicated. Raureti was captain and had purchased the liquor which was taken in a truck to the house. In,fining each defendant £2 and costs, varying from 27s to 15s the magistrate observed this class of offence appeared to be increasing and that if it continued to do so he have to. inflict heavier penalties.
