SAVING THE BABIES

PLUNKET SOCIETY ANNUAL MEETING HELD The annual meeting of the Whakatane Branch of the Plunket Society was held in the Methodist Hall, King Street, on Wednesday, August 20, Mrs B. S. Barry presiding over a good attendance of members.

Apologies were received from Mesdames Dainton, Spring, Lysaght, Kingsley-Smith, H. Morgan, Abbott, Wallace and Whitty. The balance sheet showed a satisfactory position after the year’s working. The following officers were elected for the current year:— President: Mrs Rex Morpeth. Vice-presidents: Mesdames Kendall, Shapley, Zinsli and Cairns. Hon. Vice-presidents: Mesdames L. Buddie, F. B. Cutler, B. S. Barry, W. Sullivan, F. Sutcliffe and C. A. Suckling. Hon. Secretary: Mrs L. M. Roach. Hon. Treasurer: Mr C. A. Suckling. Hon. Auditor: Mr N. H. E. Hockin. Hon. Solicitor: Mr L. Buddie.

Advisory Board: Drs. Appleby, Dawson, Cole and Akel and Messrs. Sullivan and Buddie. Committee: Mesdames Spring, Dainton, Knights, Kingsley-Smith, Debreceny, O’Rourke, Alan Bridger, L. Wilson, Duthie, E. Johnson, Bryers, Whittle, Dallas, Smart, Slipper, Abbott, Buttermore, Metcalfe and H. Morgan. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the retiring president, Mrs Cairns, who had held office for the past five years. On behalf of the retiring committee Mrs Morpeth presented Mrs Cairns with a hat box. Mrs Cairns suitably replied. Vbtes of thanks were also passed to the retiring auditor, Mr L. R. Spring, the treasurer, Mr C. A. Suckling, and the secretary, Mrs L. M. Roach.

The meeting stood in silence as a mark of respect to the late Mrs C. G. Caisley, a past president and secretary of the branch. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the Mayoress, Mrs Barry.
