Bay of Plenty Beacon Published Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. FRIDAY, AUGUST 29, 1947

Local & General

Shipping News The Tuhoe sailed from Whakatane yesterday at 3 p.m. and the Clansman is expected on Monday.

Crippled Children’s Appeal The Whakatane County Council last Tuesday voted the sum of £2 2s towards the local Crippled Children’s Society’s Appeal. Girl Guides’ Stall The Edgecumbe Girl Guides will be holding a stall at Bell’s Hall, Edgecumbe, on Monday, September 1. Donations for sale at the stall will be greatly appreciated. Obviously! The County Council was discussing the newly-listed noxious weed known as Bathurst Burr, of which there are already substantial stands in the district. “Where does this Bathurst Burr come from?” queried one Councillor at a loss. “From Bathurst” came the quick rejoinder from across the table.

Offer From Frontiersmen An offer which was warmly appreciated and promptly accepted by the Whakatane County Council on Tuesday came from the ‘Y’ Squadron (Whakatane) of the Legion of Frontiersmen, which offered the services of its members in any capacity in which it could as an organised body, render service.

Aerodrome Proposal “It should not be forgotten,” said Cr Hunter at the meeting* of the Whakatane County Council last Tuesday, when discussing the proposal to construct the aerodrome at Piripai, “that any aerodrome constructed today will be a national asset, for if the Government takes over and runs all service lines, as it plans to do, it should be the Government which finds the money to construct the landing fields.”

Grassland Production The attention of those following agricultural pursuits is drawn to the advertisement appearing in this issue re the lecture to be given in the Awakeri Hall by Messrs. Bruce Levy and Peter Spears under the auspices of the Young Farmers’ Clubs. Mr Levy is director of the Plant Research Bureau, Grasslands Division, Palmerston North. The work of this institute is often wrongly accredited Massey College. Mr Levy is the man responsible for the certification of grass and clover seed, and the opportunity to hear him and his colleague should not be missed by any progressive farmers in the district.

Title Of Mount Edgecumbe The Whakatane County Council has decided to lodge a formal protest against the re-naming of Mount Edgecumbe, ‘Putauaki’ when such action is gazetted. The decision was made by the N.Z. Geographic Board and in spite of official protests going forward from this district the Board has decided to adhere to its decision.

Pig Crop Subsidy The Primary Industry Controller has notified all Pig Councils that the Government Pig Crop Subsidy Scheme will not be proceeded with during the coming season. A compensating increase in price is likely to be made and it is still vital to the maintenance of pig production that farmers produce as much winter feed as possible because imported feeding-stuffs will not be available in any great quantity next winter.
